ABOUT US

The Chiefs created the Battle River Indigenous Relations Council Inc. (BRIRC) in summer of 2020, in response to concerns about the rapid rate of development in the Battleford's region.

Battle River IRC's main objective is the advancement and protection of the member Nation's rights, culture and way of life.

This may include:

- Crown consultation

- Building governance capacity, and,

- Any other matters that arise on the direction of the member Nations.

Our work is funded by government and the Nations we serve.

We work with Three Nations:

Treaty 6

Treaty 6 is the sixth of the numbered treaties that were signed by the Crown and First Nations between 1871 and 1877. Lucky Man and Little Pine affirmed their Nations' sovereignty by adhering to Treaty 6 on July 2, 1879 and Moosomin in 1881.

Spirit and Intent

The Chiefs entered Treaty with the spirit and intent of sharing the lands to the depth of a plow. Sacred ceremony and prayer gave First Nations trust in Treaty and built the foundation of the Treaty relationship. Treaty was made to last as long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the river flows. Treaty remains ever relevant today.
